Drivers are Software. Hardware attached to your computer require software drivers to be recognized by the computer.  Driver software is normally packaged with the new hardware.  There will be several reasons why you may need to find hardware drivers.  One such reason is that you have lost or destroyed the original drivers.  Someone gave you the hardware and did not give you the drivers. You need to find an updated driver due to installing a new operating system, such as upgrading from Windows95 to Windows98. It’s is also a good idea to check for updated drivers for your existing hardware, drivers are updated by the manufacturer constantly.

Windows Drivers. All versions of Windows have common drivers. That is, Windows may find your hardware drivers and install them automatically using its Plug-and-Play feature. If Windows does not install the drivers, you will have to tell Windows where to find them.  In this case you will need to download the new or updated drivers.
